Serenity Week

Friday is the world premiere of Serenity. For those that don't know, it's the feature film adaptation of the sci-fi western (yes, I said sci-fi western) Firefly, which Fox mangled and then killed off after airing 10 episodes.

However, the Browncoats have done the impossible, and that makes them mighty. The audience for Firefly, which was small but extremely devoted while it was airing, has grown exponentially since, especially with the release of the full season (including three episodes that never made it to air) on DVD.

So a full length movie is coming out. It's been test marketed in locales around the country and the word is pretty positive, at least from the fan base and others that have seen it that maybe weren't big fans. I'm looking forward to seeing what the mainstream reviewers think of it.

I probably won't get out to Serenity until next Saturday, when the church has Parents' Night Out and we can leave Benjamin down there. Friends of ours that we introduced to the show will probably go with us. I've not known anyone personally that tried the show and didn't like it. The writing is sharp, the plots aren't always what you think, and there's lots of humor.

But for this week, I'll try to include a Firefly quote into every blog entry. Today's comes from the pilot, which was also called "Serenity." (Serenity is the name of the ship, by the way. It's a Firefly-class ship, which is where the title of the series comes from.)

Captain Malcolm Reynolds: "I had a good day."
Simon Tam (medic): "You had the law on you, criminals and savages...half the people on this ship have been shot or wounded including yourself, and you are harboring known fugitives."
Mal: "We're still flying."
Simon: "That's not much."
Mal: "It's enough."

On to other topics....actually had PK last night. We haven't had it in over a month, I don't believe. Seems like it's always getting cancelled at the last minute. Anyway, we watched a DVD put out by Promise Keepers and decided we'd start reading Max Lucado's Come Thirsty, which most of us already owned. It's a good book and I'm looking forward to going through it again.

We actually wrapped up early, so I stopped by, picked up a Dew for me and a Hawaiian Punch for Meron and surprised her by asking if she wanted to pop popcorn and watch a Smallville episode. We've been teasing each other about this marriage class we are taking at church (especially this week when the theme of Sunday's sermon and tomorrow's class is "What Women Want Men to Know About Women) but it probably has helped keep ideas for us foremost in mind. We're having lunch Thursday as well while Benjamin's at TLC.

Cards take on Houston tonight in a short series. Hard to believe the playoffs start a week from today. Where did this season go? Hopefully we'll be watching Cardinal baseball until the end of October!

I have no idea what Serenity or Firefly are, so I'll just say "GO CARDS!" :)

I love Firefly and I can't wait to see Serenity! We're going to see it on Saturday. I've watched a couple of episodes last night on Sci-Fi. It irks me how networks don't give good shows a chance.

Didn't realize you were a Firefly fan, Danyelle!

Watched the marathon last night as well, along with the special. Wish we could get it back on TV!
