Random Thoughts

I've been meaning to blog all week and never have quite gotten around to it. So this will be a mismash of things from this week, provided in a nice bullet-point form:

*It's food weekend here in Russellville. Well, not actually a weekend, more like a couple of days at the end of the week. (Why do I suddenly feel like Mr. Kimball on Green Acres?) Anyway, last night was the annual "Taste of the Valley", where local restaurants, caterers, etc. come and provide samples of their wares. You can eat yourself senseless and the mix of foods you normally wouldn't put together can cause some gastrointestial gymnastics. The local Little Caesar's and Quiznos brought food along with the more local places to eat. Lots of good food out there, and all of us really enjoyed it.

*Today is our church's "World-Famous" Chicken BBQ. We've been doing this for over 25 years now and it always gets a good reception. For $6 (it went up from $5 this year), you get a chicken half (which I heard the average size of this year's is over 2 pounds), homemade cole slaw, cookies, bread and beans. Most people drive through in the evening, but if you come in you get something to drink as well. It's a heck of a deal, in my opinion. I've taken tickets inside for the past 15+ years, and this is the first year in about 8 that I've not taken the day off to cook with them. We started delivering lunches a couple of years ago and I heard today we had over 500 to deliver today, so it's really gone over well.

*A couple of my wife's best friends from Ohio have come down to enjoy the culinary feasting. They got in yesterday and are heading back Monday. Not only do they get TotV and the BBQ, but there's a potluck at church on Sunday. Talk about eating all the time!

*Benjamin is getting cuter every day, but that's not a big surprise, is it? He's starting to get the "Woo" part of the famous "Woo Pig Sooie" call down. (What, you of non-Arkansas origin do not know of calling the Hogs? Head over to this site and scroll down to "The Hog Call". Those of you with Arkansas in your blood, well, you know what I'm talking about.) Anyway, he does the "Woo" and gets his hands up. We're working on that, though. He has other important things down, like what a Cardinal is and he knows who Albert Pujols is, even if he can't quite say it yet. His first Pujols shirt should be arriving today, so we'll get a picture of the two of us dressed for Cardinal baseball.

*Here's one of the more recent pictures of the guy. We are working the pacifier away from him, and he goes most of the day without it. If he sees one out, though, he tends to pick it up and pop it in his mouth.

*He's also finally learning how to sleep in his own bed. He made it all the way through the night in there Monday night, which really panicked his mother and I, since we were all concerned something was wrong and checked on him multiple times during the night. Last night, he slept in there until about 6 this morning, when I heard something at the side of the bed and realized it was him coming in to get into bed with us. It's the first time he's gotten out of bed by himself; usually he just cries or makes noise until we come in there to get him. But he's been in his bed at least 2-3 hours every night this week and takes naps in it well, so here's hoping it continues.

*To go along with all that, he's throwing overhand, something my wife says is advanced for his age (based on a developmental chart she found recently). His accuracy is nothing to be desired yet, but he has a bit of an arm on him at the moment. He throws righty, though, so there's no guaranteed major-league job for him.

*My Rotisserie team isn't getting any better. I shipped Damon off for Marcus Giles (dropping Polonco and picking up Marcus's brother Brian) but that move hasn't taken affect yet. Still, I'm sitting in last and not showing much signs of life. I wind up picking up Chris Ray, and in his first outing for me he gives up three runs in an inning. This is why I don't like closers, I tell ya!

*The Cards are playing fairly good baseball. They've won 4 in a row and 7 of their last 8. Granted, that's against teams like Pittsburgh and Washington, teams with terrible records, but you've got to beat up on those teams to stay in contention. Next week should be fun with two-games series against Cincinnati and Houston, the two teams ahead of them in the standings.

*Albert Pujols is flat out amazing. 12 homers and he's already had the game-winning RBI in 6 of the Cardinals' 15 wins. It's no wonder Pittsburgh walked him twice intentionally in the last game of the series. 'Course, they pitched to him in the bottom of the ninth with runners on....and he promptly singled to win the game. Don't mess with El Hombre, and get ready in 10-15 years to add the number 5 to the list of retired Cardinal numbers.

*CCH is doing well. Visits are up, posts are up, the YNOT leagues are in full swing. The mods are doing a great job of rerouting discussions, stamping out fires, and generally encouraging good discussion. I expect the rest of the season and the post-season to be the same way!

*Therapy is going well also. We are close to cutting back from three times a week to just twice. We'll evaluate at the end of next week and see. The last real problems are my left hip, which makes my gait off, and the leg strength in the thighs and quads. We are making progress, though walking around Taste of the Valley last night just about killed me since I went straight from therapy to there. That was a big mistake. One of the new exercises Gabe has me on really works the thighs, and they are still sore today. Yesterday I had to find a seat every once in a while, because I was sure I was going to fall over, and as crowded as that place was, I'd have taken some people down with me!

I guess that's about enough for today. Hopefully I'll update again before next Friday! Have a good weekend!

Does your Church deliver to St. Louis? If they do let me know! Sounds good!

That's just a little out of our delivery range, Obie. Plus we'd have to charge for gas, and that'd make it one expensive chicken!
